Sony’s limited-edition PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary edition went on sale early Thursday morning for $999.99, attracting numerous buyers who faced long digital queues. Many waited over an hour only to find the console sold out quickly, as resellers also competed for the rare item.
Resellers have since flooded eBay with listings for the console, with prices exceeding $4,000. Some listings even hint at much higher asking prices, such as one that seeks $10,000, though eBay’s Terapeak tool indicates no sales have occurred at those figures. Other resellers have set their initial prices around $3,000.
The intense demand can be attributed to the fact that only 12,300 units were manufactured, a nod to the launch date of the original PlayStation in Japan in 1994. Despite the challenges posed by scalpers, some consumers successfully purchased the console early Thursday through Sony’s website.
Additionally, Sony has opened preorders for the PS5 Pro, which reportedly still has available units on the PlayStation Direct website. The official launch date for the PS5 Pro is set for November 7. However, the console’s $699 price and the decision to exclude a disc drive may have impacted overall demand. Further reviews of the product are expected soon.
