PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary: Limited Edition Sparks Resale Frenzy!

Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary edition was released for sale early Thursday morning at a price of $999.99, but securing one required navigating through a lengthy digital queue. Many potential buyers waited over an hour, only to see the console quickly sell out as resellers attempted to purchase it as well.

Following its release, numerous resellers have listed the console on eBay, with some prices surpassing $4,000. These listings include sales receipts, reflecting that the console won’t be shipped until November 21. One particularly ambitious seller is asking for $10,000, although data from eBay’s Terapeak tool indicates that no buyers have accepted any of these offers. Other resellers have started their listings at $3,000.

The limited production run of just 12,300 units is fueling the high prices, as this number commemorates the date of the original PlayStation’s launch in Japan in 1994, before its U.S. debut the following year.

Despite the challenges posed by scalpers, some consumers successfully purchased the console on Sony’s website during the initial sale. Additionally, on the same day, Sony began accepting preorders for the PS5 Pro, and units remain available through the PlayStation Direct site.

The PS5 Pro is set to officially launch on November 7, but its $699 price and the decision to eliminate the disc drive may have impacted overall demand. More details and a review of the console are forthcoming.
