The exclusive Sony PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary edition went on sale early Thursday morning for $999.99, prompting a lengthy digital queue for eager buyers. Despite waiting over an hour, the console quickly sold out, with resellers also attempting to purchase the limited item.
Some of these resellers have listed the console on eBay, where prices have soared beyond $4,000. To substantiate their listings, they included sales receipts since the consoles will only ship on November 21.
One seller has even priced the console at $10,000, although eBay’s Terapeak tool indicates that no buyers have committed to any of the listings yet. Other resellers have set their prices starting at $3,000.
With only 12,300 PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary units manufactured—signifying the date of the original PlayStation release in Japan in 1994—scalpers are hoping that determined Sony fans will pay a premium for the rare console.
Despite the scalping activity, some consumers successfully purchased the console through Sony’s website shortly after its release. Additionally, on the same day, Sony started preorders for the standard PS5 Pro, which appears to still have units available on the PlayStation Direct site.
The PS5 Pro is set to officially launch on November 7. However, its $699 price point and the removal of the disc drive may have affected demand. Further coverage, including a review of the product, is anticipated.
