Sony’s limited-edition PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary edition was released for $999.99 early Thursday morning, quickly capturing the attention of gamers. However, consumers faced long digital queues, with some waiting over an hour before the unit sold out rapidly due to resellers also attempting to purchase the sought-after console.
Following the sale, numerous scalpers took to eBay, listing the PS5 Pro for inflated prices that soared past $4,000. They included sales receipts as proof of purchase, noting that the device will not ship until November 21. One aggressive reseller even attempted to sell the console for $10,000, although data from eBay’s Terapeak tool indicates that none of the overpriced listings have yet sold. Other resellers have set their starting prices around $3,000.
The high prices are fueled by the fact that Sony has only produced 12,300 units of the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary edition. This specific number corresponds to the launch date of the original PlayStation, which debuted in Japan in 1994 and was released in the U.S. the following year.
Despite the scalpers’ efforts, some consumers successfully purchased the console right after its release on Sony’s website. In addition, Sony began taking preorders for the PS5 Pro on the same day, with units reportedly still available for sale through the PlayStation Direct website.
The PS5 Pro is set to officially launch on November 7, with a retail price of $699. However, the decision to omit a disc drive may have impacted overall demand.
