Prunella Scales, celebrated for her unforgettable role as Sybil in the iconic British sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 93. Her family confirmed that she passed away peacefully at her home in London, surrounded by her loved ones.
Despite her battle with dementia, which led to her retirement after a distinguished 70-year acting career, Scales found solace in her home, reportedly watching episodes of Fawlty Towers just a day before she passed. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, expressed their gratitude for the loving care she received in her later years, ensuring she was “comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love.”
Scales’ portrayal of Sybil, the enduring wife of the famously irritable Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese, remains one of her most memorable performances. This role earned Fawlty Towers a BAFTA award for best scripted comedy in 1976. John Cleese fondly remembered Scales as “a really wonderful comic actress,” highlighting her remarkable skill in delivering comedic perfection.
Alongside her late husband, actor Timothy West, who died in November 2024, Scales navigated many life and career challenges over more than six decades. They often shared their experiences, including her struggles with dementia, in the Channel 4 series Great Canal Journeys.
