Prunella Scales, revered for her iconic portrayal of Sybil in the legendary British sitcom Fawlty Towers, has passed away at the age of 93. Her family confirmed she died peacefully at her home in London, surrounded by loved ones.
Despite facing the challenges posed by dementia, which led to her retirement from a celebrated 70-year acting career, Scales remained in the comfort of her home, reportedly watching Fawlty Towers just a day before her death. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, expressed gratitude for the care she received in her later years, ensuring she felt “comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love.”
Scales’ career is marked by memorable performances, notably as Sybil, the long-suffering wife of Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese. This role in Fawlty Towers earned the show a BAFTA award for best scripted comedy in 1976. John Cleese remembered her as “a really wonderful comic actress,” praising her ability to deliver perfection in numerous scenes.
Together with her late husband, actor Timothy West, who passed away in November 2024, Scales navigated life and career challenges for over 61 years. The couple often shared their experiences, including her battle with dementia, in the Channel 4 series Great Canal Journeys.
Throughout her impressive career, Scales portrayed a range of characters, from Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution, which garnered her a BAFTA nomination, to starring in the sitcom Marriage Lines in the early 1960s. Her versatility also shone through in theatrical productions and films such as The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne.
