As in previous years, three promising players from Barça Academy Residency Arizona have commenced training with FC Barcelona’s youth teams, a program aimed at evaluating their development in terms of performance and attitude. This year, the chosen talents by the US-based coaches are Graham Ford, Makai Wells, and Jorge Padilla. All three have recently participated in the MLS playoffs, a competition noted for its growing competitiveness.
Graham Ford has joined the U16A team, where he previously made a strong impression during a training camp last year. A left-footed central midfielder, Ford is known for his teamwork, ability to retain possession, and insightful reading of the game.
Makai Wells, also training with the U16A squad, marks his first visit to Barcelona. In his short time at Barça Academy Pro Arizona, he has showcased his skills as a right winger, excelling in passing and one-on-one scenarios, making him a player to watch.
Jorge Padilla has been assigned to the U19B team and, after four years at the Arizona center, this is his inaugural moment at the Ciutat Esportiva. He gained recognition for his performances in the MLS U16 playoffs, which greatly contributed to his selection for this European experience. Padilla, a right-sided midfielder, is known for his strong tackling and direct playing style that consistently positions him in attacking opportunities. His dedication and work ethic have also played a crucial role in earning him this exciting opportunity in Barcelona.
The Barça Residency Academy Arizona holds a unique position as the only FC Barcelona program in North America, having opened its doors in 2017. It employs FC Barcelona coaches on-site to effectively transfer the club’s training methodology. Located in Casa Grande, the academy features eight soccer fields, a study center in partnership with Arizona State University, and is distinctive as the only Barça Academy with participation in MLS Next, the premier youth league in the United States.
The development opportunities provided by the Barça Residency Academy highlight a commitment to nurturing young soccer talent, offering them exposure to elite training environments and helping them achieve their dreams in professional soccer. This initiative not only supports individual growth but also strengthens the broader soccer community in North America.
