The rugby league community is mourning the tragic loss of Fijian international and former Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs junior, Mesake ‘Mes’ Ravonu, who passed away at just 22 years old after a long battle with kidney disease.

Ravonu was considered a rising star in the sport, having to retire in 2024 following his diagnosis with chronic kidney disease. His promising career included representing Fiji Bati during the 2023 Pacific Championships, where he was a vital member of the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs’ 2023 Jersey Flegg premiership squad, making his Test debut during the championships.

Despite facing significant challenges, including two serious injuries in his rookie year with the Bulldogs after joining before the 2022 season, Ravonu showcased remarkable perseverance. His selection for the Fiji Bati squad in 2023 was a proud moment for both him and his family.

In 2024, Ravonu aimed to join the Bulldogs’ NSW Cup squad, but his path took a heartbreaking turn when he was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, an autoimmune kidney disease. He returned to Fiji, where he spent his final moments in his hometown of Malawai, Nadi, surrounded by loved ones.

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs paid tribute to him in a heartfelt statement, saying, “The Bulldogs family will forever remember Mesake’s determination, infectious smile, and the joy he brought to everyone around him.” The club expressed their deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time, highlighting the lasting impact he made on those who knew him.

Ravonu’s story is a testament to his talent and dedication to rugby league, as well as the strength of his character in overcoming adversity. His legacy will continue to inspire many within and beyond the rugby league community.
