Individuals and companies operating within the petroleum sector, particularly those in need of a Dangerous Goods (DG) Class 3 license, now have the opportunity to obtain their certification through a qualified private entity accredited by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). Michael’s Safety Training & Consultancy Services, led by experienced trainer Michael Fong, commenced offering this vital training following the LTA’s endorsement in March 2023.

With over 25 years of expertise in DG Class 3 driver training, Mr. Fong has garnered significant knowledge from his certification with Shell Australia. His comprehensive training covers essential aspects such as handling, storing, and transporting dangerous goods, as well as confined space entry and responding to marine oil spills.

Claiming to be the sole DG Class 3 trainer in Fiji and the wider Pacific region, Mr. Fong has tailored the training for operators in the petroleum industry. It is designed for private operators and corporate entities involved in transporting Class 3 products like benzene, diesel, kerosene, and Jet A1, all of which pose flammability and combustibility risks.

The training program consists of three segments: theoretical classroom instruction on risk assessments, the use of fire extinguishers, truck components, driver behavior, and defensive driving, coupled with practical sessions focused on understanding the features and functions of petroleum tankers and safe discharge techniques on-site.

Mr. Fong highlighted the urgency of mastering vehicle operations for DG drivers. He emphasized, “As a DG driver, it’s imperative that the driver thoroughly understands his or her vehicle in order for him or her to drive and deliver,” underscoring the necessity of awareness, mental acuity, and physical fitness for effective and safe driving practices.

After an initial slow uptake of the training program, Mr. Fong has observed a growing interest from companies in Labasa and Savusavu. He has actively engaged professional organizations like the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF) and the Fiji Human Resources Institute (FHRI) to promote awareness about the importance of this training.

Beyond focusing solely on DG Class 3 drivers, Mr. Fong advocates for accountability and responsibility in driving, stressing the importance of adhering to vehicle safety standards to safeguard both drivers and the public. With a commitment to enhancing safety in the petroleum industry, Michael’s Safety Training & Consultancy Services aims to improve training and awareness, creating a safer environment for all involved.
