The Princeton Athletics community and the Princeton football program are grieving the tragic loss of Martin “Tiger” Bech ’21, who died in a violent incident in New Orleans on Wednesday morning.
Bob Surace, the Charles W. Caldwell Jr. Head Coach of Football, reflected on Bech’s impact, stating, “There was no more appropriate nickname for a Princeton player I coached. He was a ‘Tiger’ in every way – a fierce competitor with boundless energy, a cherished teammate, and a compassionate friend. My last conversation with him was filled with pride for the remarkable progress he made during his time at Princeton and the achievements he was enjoying after graduation. My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Bech family.”
During his time at Princeton, Bech was a key player on the 2016 and 2018 Ivy League Championship teams. He earned All-Ivy honors as a return specialist, receiving second-team recognition in 2018, a year when Princeton achieved its first perfect season since 1964. In addition, he collected 53 receptions for 825 yards and scored three touchdowns as a wide receiver throughout his collegiate career.
This loss highlights the impact that athletes can have both on and off the field, showcasing the strong bonds formed in collegiate sports. As the community comes together to honor Bech’s memory, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of friendship, teamwork, and support during difficult times.
