Oncologist Anthony Phillips has secured the Republican nomination for the newly established State Senate District 18, defeating Appleton businessman Blong Yang, as indicated by unofficial results from Tuesday’s primary election.
Phillips will compete against Appleton Alderwoman Kristin Alfiem, the sole Democratic candidate, in the general election set for November 5. This newly drawn district includes the cities of Appleton, Menasha, Neenah, and Oshkosh.
Former Republican Senator Dan Feyen has been redistricted out of District 18 and is now campaigning for reelection in State Senate District 20.
In another noteworthy primary, incumbent State Assembly District 53 Republican Senator Michael Schraa lost his reelection bid in District 55, which was retained by Winnebago County Board Supervisor Nate Gustafson.
Kyle Kehoe, a real estate agent, ran unopposed for the Democratic ticket and will challenge Gustafson in the newly shaped district that encompasses Grand Chute, Fox Crossing, Winneconne, and Omro.
In District 57, incumbent Kevin Peterson, drawn from State Assembly District 40, won the Republican nomination against real estate professional Duane Wilson and is set to face Democrat Ruth Caves.
Former Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert and retired environmental health and safety manager Duane Shukoski were both unchallenged for the Republican and Democratic nominations in District 53, respectively. Kaufert is returning to political life after a two-year break due to the redistricting.
In State Assembly District 54, incumbent Democratic Senator and former Oshkosh Mayor Lori Palmeri, along with Republican Tim Paterson, were both unopposed.
District 39 saw no challenges for Republican Alex Dallman and Democrat Chris Gordon.
In the race for U.S. Senate, multi-millionaire Sunwest Bank CEO Eric Hovde secured the Republican nomination and will face two-term Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin after winning against Rejani Raveendran and Charles Barman.
Additionally, former business owner Tony Wied won the Republican nomination for the 8th Congressional District’s unexpired term following his victory over former state Senator Roger Roth and current Senate incumbent Andre Jacque. Wied will go against Kristin Lyerly, the lone Democratic candidate.
In the 6th U.S. Congressional District, incumbent Republican Glenn Grothman and Democratic candidate John Zarbano also ran unopposed.
Current Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr was the only candidate for the independent position, while Republican incumbents Julie Barthels and Amber Hoppa were unchallenged for the roles of Winnebago County Clerk and Treasurer, respectively.
Susan Snyder triumphed in her Republican primary against former Oshkosh Mayor Paul Esslinger and will compete against Democrat Christopher Larson for the clerk position.
Voters also rejected two proposed constitutional amendments aimed at granting the Legislature increased control over federal spending.
