In recognition of Pride Month, Native Son is gearing up to host the 2025 Native Son Awards, an annual event that honors individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities and industries. Founded by Emil Wilbekin, a notable media professional and community organizer, the awards gala is set for June 11 at New York City’s iconic IAC Building, designed by Frank Gehry.

In its eighth year, the awards will celebrate a distinguished lineup of honorees including actor Colman Domingo, designer Paul Tazewell, artist Derrick Adams, and civil rights leader Dr. David J. Johns. Notably, Don Lemon will return as host for the third consecutive year, continuing his involvement since the event’s inception in 2016.

The evening will feature a cocktail reception, dinner, and an awards ceremony, along with live performances from GRAMMY-nominated artist Durand Bernarr and The Voice contestant Deon Jones. Bill Coleman will provide music for the afterparty, ensuring a lively ambiance throughout the evening.

Reflecting the history of Pride Month, which is rooted in the Stonewall Riots, and the celebration of Juneteenth, Native Son plans to infuse purpose into the festivities. Participants can expect segments led by previous honorees that focus on social impact and community empowerment.

Native Son aims to be a platform and safe space for Black gay and queer individuals, fostering connections and empowerment through various initiatives, including workshops, discussions, and networking events. As they prepare for their milestone 10th anniversary next year, Wilbekin emphasized the importance of their work, particularly in light of the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ community.

Due to its impactful contributions, Native Son has garnered support from partners like Gilead Sciences, whose commitment to addressing HIV stigma aligns with Native Son’s mission. Throughout June, Native Son will collaborate with various organizations to further illuminate and amplify Black queer voices and experiences.

Overall, the Native Son Awards represent not only a celebration of achievements but also a reinforcement of the community’s resilience in the face of adversity.
