Pressure Mounts: Can Ten Hag Turn United’s Luck Around?

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has acknowledged the growing pressure on his team as they prepare for a critical away match against Aston Villa. Following a disappointing 3-3 draw with FC Porto in the Europa League, in which United squandered a two-goal lead, the team finds itself winless in four matches. Ten Hag’s comments come as he seeks more time to improve the squad while recognizing the urgency for results.

The Dutch coach, now in his third season at Old Trafford, has requested patience from the club’s management but conceded that in top football, time is not a luxury typically afforded to managers. “I’m not thinking about [the pressure] because that is not a topic,” he stated, emphasizing teamwork among the ownership, leadership, and players. He has introduced new staff and young players, but understanding that immediate performance is expected.

Ten Hag opted not to include summer signing Manuel Ugarte in the lineup against Porto, reverting to a midfield trio of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, and Bruno Fernandes. Ugarte, who transferred from Paris Saint-Germain for £50 million ($65.8 million), has struggled to adapt. Ten Hag highlighted this adjustment period, stating that Ugarte needs time to acclimate to the team and the demands of the Premier League.

He also noted the importance of integrating new signings into the squad, stating, “We have more positions where we need time,” while expressing satisfaction with Rasmus Højlund’s return, who missed the initial part of the season due to injury.

For the upcoming match against Villa, Ten Hag will have captain Bruno Fernandes available, as his red card from a previous game was rescinded. The status of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo remains uncertain; he missed the Porto match due to injury but participated in training prior to the game. The decision on his availability for Sunday will be made closer to the match.
