Presidents’ Day, observed on the third Monday of February, offers many Americans a well-deserved day off. This year, Presidents’ Day, officially known as Washington’s Birthday, falls on February 17, 2025. This holiday honors George Washington, the first president of the United States, whose actual birthday is February 22. Additionally, it has evolved to recognize Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is February 12.

Retailers commonly take part in the holiday by offering various discounts and sales, attracting shoppers looking for deals. Most large retailers and grocery chains, including Walmart, Target, Kroger, and Costco, will remain open, although it’s advisable to check local stores for specific operating hours.

On the financial side, major stock exchanges such as Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will be closed, reflecting the federal nature of the holiday. Most traditional banks will also close their doors, but TD Bank branches will still be available for service. Online banking and ATMs will provide essential services.

Government offices, including nonessential agencies, will observe the holiday and remain closed. This includes the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMVs), city halls, courthouses, and many libraries. Moreover, the United States Postal Service will not be delivering mail. However, UPS will be conducting operations as usual, while FedEx will be open but with modified services.

This observance promotes a spirit of unity and reflection on the contributions of U.S. presidents to the nation’s history. As businesses prepare for sales and Americans plan their day off, Presidents’ Day encourages both economic participation and communal recognition of presidential legacies.
