Barry Trotz announced on Monday his decision to step down as general manager of the Nashville Predators, though he will continue in the role until a successor is appointed. The announcement was made during a media conference at noon central time, where it was confirmed that Trotz is retiring at the end of the regular season, affirming that he is in good health and not seeking to return to coaching.

The Predators are currently just four points away from a playoff position, following a challenging start to the 2025-26 season. With the Olympic freeze approaching and the trade deadline just a month away, the organization is exploring its options to enhance team performance. In preparation for his departure, Trotz stated that the team has enlisted CAA to assist in the search for the new general manager.

Trotz holds a significant place in Nashville’s hockey history, having served as the inaugural head coach when the Predators entered the NHL in 1998. He guided the team until 2014 and later achieved success with the Washington Capitals, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018, before his tenure with the New York Islanders. He returned to the Predators as the second general manager in the team’s history in 2023, taking over from David Poile.

At 63, Trotz revealed that he communicated his intention to step down to majority owner Bill Haslam back in December, aligning plans to begin the search for his replacement well in advance of his contract expiration at the end of the 2026-27 season. Trotz expressed his willingness to continue serving in his current capacity until a new hire is finalized, regardless of the time it may take. Haslam expressed hopes to have a replacement in place by the upcoming NHL draft in late June, downplaying any friction between management and Trotz that might have influenced this transition.

Barry Trotz’s legacy in Nashville is monumental, having brought stability and recognition to a franchise that started in a non-traditional hockey market. His professional journey exemplifies dedication to the sport and the community, and as the organization looks toward a new era, there remains optimism for the future of the Predators as they seek continued growth and success.
