John MacArthur, the esteemed 86-year-old pastor, broadcaster, and author, has been hospitalized due to pneumonia, prompting a heartfelt call for prayers from his church as he navigates what may be his final days. This update was shared at Grace Community Church, where he has dedicated over 50 years of service as pastor-teacher. Staff pastor Tom Patton conveyed to the congregation that MacArthur “may be in the presence of the Lord soon,” encouraging prayers for him and his family during this challenging time.
Patton expressed, “We place our beloved pastor at the feet of the glorious Savior whom he has served so faithfully,” emphasizing the need for “grace upon grace” for MacArthur’s wife, Patricia, their children, and their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Due to ongoing health issues, MacArthur has not been active in public ministry throughout 2024. Earlier this year, he marked 56 years at Grace Community Church but has yet to preach. His health has been a concern in recent years; following breathing difficulties from a sermon in January 2023, he underwent multiple heart procedures and lung surgery, spending seven weeks in the hospital before being discharged in February 2024.
Although he reassured the public last April about his recovery with a light-hearted remark regarding the “exaggerated rumors of my death,” MacArthur has still been unable to resume his preaching duties or attend the Shepherds Conference, a key event for church leaders held in March.
As a revered figure in the evangelical community, MacArthur has delivered over 3,000 sermons since 1969 and authored a significant number of books and biblical commentaries. His media ministry, Grace to You, has reached a global audience through various platforms, amplifying his influence.
In a reflective moment during a 2024 interview, he acknowledged the realities of aging and mortality, stating, “I realize I’m on the last lap.” This candid recognition resonates with many as they contemplate the journey of life and faith.
Church leaders worldwide are rallying supporters to join in prayer for MacArthur and his family during this poignant time, fostering a spirit of hope and community support.
