Kolhapuri Chappals are set to make a significant mark in the global fashion scene as Italian luxury brand Prada has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to create a limited-edition collection featuring the iconic sandals. This collaboration will produce about 2,000 pairs, drawing on traditional craftsmanship from Maharashtra and Karnataka. Each pair will be priced at approximately 800 euros ($930), equivalent to around Rs 84,000, and will be available starting February at 40 select Prada stores worldwide and through the brand’s website.

The announcement comes after Prada faced criticism for cultural appropriation regarding Kolhapuri Chappals, which are a staple of Indian footwear. The move is seen as an opportunity for the brand to blend these traditional sandals with its contemporary luxury aesthetic. The collection is intended to foster a dialogue between the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship and modern luxury.

Suraj Satpute, a young artisan from Kolhapur, expressed optimism about this partnership, highlighting its potential to preserve and showcase traditional craftsmanship on a global platform. He indicated that the collaboration would enable local artisans to display their skills while benefiting from the resources provided by Prada, including high-quality leather for production. In support of the initiative, Prada confirmed plans to implement training programs for local artisans in cooperation with industry organizations.

Piyush Goyal, India’s Commerce Minister, underscored the immense potential of Kolhapuri Chappals in the global market, estimating that exports could reach $1 billion over time. This collaboration not only opens doors for traditional Indian craftsmanship but also enhances visibility and appreciation of such artisan products on an international level, presenting a hopeful outlook for the future of Kolhapuri Chappals and their makers.
