Power Struggles: McConnell’s Tenuous Ties to Trump Revealed

In his new biography, “The Price of Power,” Michael Tackett explores the complex relationship between Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump, detailing how the Senate leader has navigated the turbulent political landscape of recent years. Following the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol, the shattered window of McConnell’s office served as a stark reminder of the chaos that unfolded, with McConnell condemning the events as evidence of Trump’s unfitness for office.

Tackett reveals that McConnell had a longstanding disdain for Trump, describing him as “not very smart, irascible, nasty” and a “despicable human being.” However, despite expressing a desire to convict Trump during his second impeachment trial for what McConnell labeled as a grave offense, he ultimately chose not to follow through. Such a conviction could have barred Trump from future office, but McConnell opted to maintain the political status quo, delaying any attempts to push Trump into political obscurity.

Fast-forward nearly four years, and McConnell remains supportive of Trump, whom he openly criticizes as a “sleazeball,” as he prepares for the upcoming 2024 election. Tackett underscores McConnell’s conflicted stance when he notes, “He had no choice but to support the nominee.” This statement reflects McConnell’s prioritization of party loyalty over personal animosity toward Trump, despite articulating concerns about Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election. As McConnell put it, he hopes Trump will face consequences for those actions.
