NV Energy is enhancing its wildfire detection efforts through the installation of 53 new cameras as part of its “Power Safe NV” initiative. Jesse Murray, the senior vice president of energy delivery at NV Energy, emphasized the sprawling nature of their service area, which spans over 45,000 square miles. He stated, “We want to be able to see fires as soon as they start,” highlighting the challenges posed by the large expanses of Nevada, where many areas have limited human observation.
The installation of the cameras has received approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, with plans to place 35 cameras in northern Nevada and 15 in the southern part of the state. Murray explained that the strategic placement of these cameras is critical, as they will be positioned on mountain peaks or atop buildings to provide a 360-degree view, ensuring extensive visibility over the state’s diverse terrain.
This initiative comes in response to the increasing frequency of wildfires and underscores NV Energy’s commitment to safety and proactive measures in monitoring potential fire risks.
