Residents across the Central Coast are preparing for power shutoffs and outage alerts this weekend as utility companies respond to potentially dangerous fire weather conditions.
As of Saturday afternoon, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) reported that 294 residents in Northern San Luis Obispo County were experiencing power outages following the company’s implementation of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). This measure affects areas east of San Miguel as well as regions surrounding Lake Nacimiento. PG&E has emphasized that these outages are a precautionary step to minimize wildfire risks amid unseasonably warm temperatures and high winds.
Customers impacted by the PSPS can expect their power to be restored by Sunday afternoon. In an effort to support those without electricity, Cuesta College’s North County campus in Paso Robles is providing essential services such as air conditioning, internet access, and other resources during the shutoff.
In addition, PG&E has issued another PSPS warning for Santa Barbara County, which is anticipated to last until noon on Sunday. Currently, reports indicate that one customer in this area is without power.
Southern California Edison (SCE) is also monitoring the situation, considering power shutoffs for 643 customers located along the coastline from Montecito to Jalama Beach County Park. These advisories come in conjunction with a red flag warning issued for the interior mountains of Santa Barbara County due to critical fire weather conditions characterized by strong winds, low humidity, and elevated temperatures. The red flag warning took effect at 1 p.m. on Saturday and is expected to remain in place until 5 a.m. on Sunday.
As we navigate these challenging weather conditions, it’s crucial for residents to stay informed and prepared to ensure their safety and well-being. The collaborative efforts of community centers like Cuesta College reflect a communal spirit, aiding those in need during difficult times.
