Power Outages and Heatwave: Adams County Residents Face Double Trouble

On Monday, over 2,500 residents in Adams County found themselves without power as the region faces intense heat, with temperatures jumping well into the 90s. According to Met Ed, approximately 2,600 outages were recorded by noon, attributed to “equipment damage” at a substation that supplies electricity to Germany Township, Union Township, Mount Pleasant Township, and Mount Joy Township.

Met Ed anticipates that electricity will be restored by 7 p.m. on Monday. Due to the complexity of the necessary repairs, additional crews have been dispatched to address the situation effectively.

In the meantime, residents impacted by the outages can receive free assistance in the form of ice and bottled water. Affected customers can collect two 10-pound bags of ice and two 1-gallon jugs of water at select Giant grocery stores—located at 44 Natural Springs Road in Gettysburg and at two locations on Eisenhower Drive and Baltimore Street in Hanover. Customers are reminded to inform the cashiers of their power outage status to receive these items.

For those looking for relief from the heat, a cooling station is open at 43 S. Columbus Avenue in Littlestown, providing a respite for as long as the power remains out. Met Ed reassured customers through their website, stating, “We understand that it is very hot today and are committed to restoring power as quickly and safely as possible.”

The hot weather is exacerbated by a high humidity level, with AccuWeather warning that temperatures could feel around 20 degrees warmer. While the heat may peak at just under 100 degrees on Tuesday, forecasts suggest a gradual decline into the 80s later in the week, offering hope for cooler conditions ahead as the community navigates this challenging weather situation.
