A widespread power outage affected nearly the entire territory of Puerto Rico on New Year’s Eve, plunging over 1.3 million customers into darkness just as they were preparing to celebrate the arrival of the new year. The outage, which occurred before dawn, was reportedly triggered by a failure of an underground power line. Officials from Luma Energy, the private company responsible for electricity transmission and distribution, indicated that it might take up to two days to fully restore power across the island.

Luma Energy stated they are working diligently to address the situation safely and efficiently. This incident has reignited public frustration toward Luma and Genera PR, the company managing power generation, with increasing calls for their dismissal. Governor-elect Jenniffer González Colón advocated for the establishment of an “energy czar” to investigate potential breaches in contracts by Luma while another operator is identified.

The current Governor, Pedro Pierluisi, has also expressed his concerns regarding the outage, communicating with Luma and Genera PR and demanding answers and swift solutions. In the meantime, residents like Raúl Pacheco and Julio Córdova are adapting to the situation, with some making plans to sleep outside or using their mobile phones to provide light in their homes.

Historically, Puerto Rico has faced chronic power outages, a problem exacerbated by the damage from Hurricane Maria in 2017 and years of maintenance neglect. Recent efforts to repair the power grid began only after the hurricane, and the government has requested federal approval to extend the use of portable generators to stabilize the grid for two more years.

Despite the challenges posed by the outage, many locals are showing resilience. Some residents have adapted by using gas stoves for cooking during such incidents, illustrating the islanders’ ability to cope with frequent power disruptions.

This outage serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles Puerto Rico faces in maintaining a stable power supply, but it also highlights the community’s spirit and determination to navigate these challenges together. As the situation develops, it is hoped that lasting improvements to the power grid will be prioritized to prevent future outages, allowing the people of Puerto Rico to celebrate significant occasions without interruption.
