Power Outage Hits Fire Safety at Fiji’s Rarawai Sugar Mill

The Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) has confirmed a significant disruption at the Rarawai Mill following a fire that led to a complete power failure. The incident rendered the mill’s critical fire safety systems, specifically the 24/7 electrical fire pump designed for fire suppression, inoperable due to power outage. As a result, the internal fire response of the mill was hindered.

Despite this challenge, FSC swiftly executed its emergency protocols. The mill management coordinated with the National Fire Authority (NFA) and local contractors to secure water tankers for fire control, emphasizing that operations remained orderly during the incident. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was brought under control.

Addressing claims of confusion during the firefighting efforts, FSC clarified that any apparent delay was due to efforts to connect river water to fire trucks during a brief pause when NFA tankers were refilling. The responsibility for municipal fire hydrants, FSC stated, does not fall under their purview but rather with local councils.

Previous articles noted that fires and mechanical issues are not new challenges for the Rarawai Mill. A recent fire had already prompted scrutiny and highlighted vulnerabilities, such as recurring issues with the mill’s boiler systems. These incidents underline the critical need for robust maintenance and operational protocols to prevent future disruptions.

In the aftermath, FSC commended the collaborative effort of its staff, the NFA, and contractors for their diligence in mitigating potential damages and ensuring safety. A commitment to improving emergency readiness was reaffirmed, as the cause of the fire continues to be investigated by the NFA.

The incident reflects ongoing efforts within Fiji’s sugar industry to enhance operational resilience, maintain safety, and secure economic stability, particularly for communities reliant on sugar production. Through strategic improvements and stakeholder collaboration, there is optimism that the sector can achieve a more robust and sustainable future.
