During a heartwarming Christmas devotional on December 14, 2025, Elder Allen D. Haynie, General Authority Seventy and president of the United States Northeast Area, announced plans for the construction of a temple in Portland, Maine, leaving the congregation filled with joy and emotion. The announcement was made during a stake Christmas fireside, capturing a significant moment for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the area.
Emma Davis, a 24-year-old member sitting with her family at the front of the church, vividly recalled her reaction: “I just started crying. I looked at my grandparents and they were so happy and couldn’t believe it. It was just a really special moment.” The temple will mark a historic first for Maine, providing its residents with more accessible opportunities to engage in sacred rituals and ordinances.
The news was greeted with reverent responses rather than loud cheers, as the congregation took in the gravity of what this announcement meant for them and their families. “There was not a dry eye in the room… We feel overwhelmed, frankly, by the opportunity,” said Portland Maine Stake President Richard J. Taylor, who noted that many members currently travel significant distances, sometimes as much as nearly three hours, to reach the Boston Massachusetts Temple.
Davis expressed that the temple’s establishment holds special significance for her family, as her local congregation, the Windham Ward, originated in her grandparents’ home. “To have a temple be built in my grandparents’ lifetime is really special and really emotional for our family,” she said.
The emotional atmosphere was palpable as attendees experienced a profound sense of community and connection. Valerie Bradshaw, another member of the Windham Ward, highlighted the uniqueness of the event, stating, “It was just so special” to have the announcement made in person, enhancing the moment’s personal significance.
Will Guerrette, who has strong pioneer ancestry in Maine, felt the weight of history during the event. “I felt like I got to be a part of something that was a celebration of literally generations of effort in the gospel in Maine,” he expressed. He described the uplifting energy in the room, especially during the closing song, “Joy to the World,” noting “hundreds of Latter-day Saints sang with more gusto than I’ve ever heard.”
The announcement marks a significant step for the members of the Portland Maine Stake, symbolizing growth and increased spiritual accessibility within the community. The collective emotions expressed during the devotional reflect the deep bonds of faith and the excitement for this new chapter in their spiritual journey, as they look forward to having their own temple. This moment not only celebrates their history but also opens doors to future generations in the faith.
