During the Angelus prayer on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV called for renewed efforts to end the war in Ukraine and urged solidarity with those affected by turmoil. He highlighted the ongoing struggle in Ukraine, where “continuous attacks” are leaving many vulnerable as winter approaches. The pope appealed for intensified efforts to seek peace in the war-torn nation, emphasizing that “peace is built on respect for peoples.”

In his reflection prior to the Angelus in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo drew from the day’s Gospel reading (Matthew 4:12-22), which discusses the commencement of Jesus’ public ministry. He pointed out that Jesus began preaching at a seemingly inopportune moment, suggesting that even in dire circumstances, the light of the Good News must be shared. The pope cautioned against the dangers of fear and excessive caution that can lead Christians to paralysis and indecision, stressing the need to have faith and courage to proclaim the Gospel.

He described Galilee, where Jesus began his mission, as a “predominantly pagan territory” that embodies multiculturalism. This choice, he noted, illustrates how Jesus’ message transcends borders and should resonate with everyone, irrespective of their background. “He is a God who excludes no one,” the pope affirmed, urging Christians to actively engage with varying cultures and communities, fostering fraternity and peace.

Additionally, Pope Leo acknowledged World Leprosy Day, expressing solidarity with those affected by the disease and gratitude for caregivers. He reminded the faithful of the importance of the Sunday of the Word of God, established by Pope Francis to promote deeper knowledge of Sacred Scripture.

As Sunday marked the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the pope announced his intention to celebrate Vespers at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls with representatives from other Christian denominations, emphasizing the ongoing quest for unity among Christians. Pope Leo’s messages serve as a poignant reminder of the necessity of faith-driven actions in the face of adversity and the importance of proclaiming peace and understanding amid global conflicts.
