Apostolic journeys have become a hallmark of the papal mission, showcasing the diplomatic role of popes in today’s interconnected world, particularly since the advent of commercial air travel. Pope Leo XIV recently completed his inaugural international trip to Turkey and Lebanon, but he is already eyeing new destinations for 2026.
During a press conference on his return flight, the Pope expressed his aspirations for upcoming travels, indicating a strong interest in visiting Africa. “I hope to travel to Africa; it will possibly be the next trip,” he stated, underscoring his desire to explore sites significant to the life of Saint Augustine in Algeria, where he served as bishop in the city of Hippo, now known as Annaba. This journey aims to foster dialogue and strengthen relationships between the Christian and Muslim communities.
Although Africa appears to be at the forefront of his travel plans, the Pope also hinted at a potential visit to Spain. “You can have hope,” he remarked when queried about the possibility, generating optimism among Spanish Bishops who believe the visit could materialize soon.
Luis Argüello, President of the Spanish Bishops’ Conference, conveyed a sense of anticipation following their meeting with the Pope, expressing confidence that he would soon experience the realities of the Spanish Church firsthand.
In addition to Africa and Spain, there are indications that Pope Leo may visit other countries linked to his predecessor, Pope Francis, and engage with South America, particularly Peru—one of his cherished locales. He expressed enthusiasm about visiting holy sites such as Fátima in Portugal, Guadalupe in Mexico, and countries like Uruguay and Argentina.
With travels planned for 2026 across these diverse regions, Pope Leo XIV’s schedule reflects a commitment to global outreach, dialogue, and understanding, aiming to bridge communities and foster connections in a year poised for significant encounters.
