OSHKOSH – Oncologist Anthony Phillips has claimed the Republican nomination for the newly established State Senate District 18, defeating Appleton businessman Blong Yang, based on unofficial primary election results from Tuesday.

Phillips will compete against Appleton Alderman Kristin Alfiem, the sole Democratic candidate, in the general election scheduled for November 5, for the reconfigured district that includes Appleton, Menasha, Neenah, and Oshkosh.

Former Republican Senator Dan Feyen has been moved out of this district and is now running for reelection in State Senate District 20.

In State Assembly District 55, Republican Michael Schraa lost his bid for reelection as incumbent Nate Gustafson, a Winnebago County Board Supervisor, secured the Republican nomination.

Real estate agent Kyle Kehoe ran unopposed for the Democratic nomination and will face Gustafson in a newly drawn district that encompasses Grand Chute, Fox Crossing, Winneconne, and Omro.

Current State Assembly District 40 Senator Kevin Peterson, who has been moved to District 57, won the Republican nomination against Duane Wilson and will confront Ruth Caves, who was unchallenged for the Democratic ticket.

In District 53, both former Neenah Mayor Dean Kaufert and retired environmental health and safety manager Duane Shukoski did not face opposition for their respective party nominations.

Kaufert is returning to politics after a two-year break following the redistricting that removed incumbent Michael Schraa from District 53.

In State Assembly District 54, incumbent Democratic Senator Lori Palmeri and Republican Tim Paterson, a Winnebago County Board Supervisor for District 11, were also unchallenged.

District 39 saw Republican Alex Dallman and Democrat Chris Gordon both run without opposition.

Eric Hovde, the CEO of Sunwest Bank, has won the Republican primary for U.S. Senate and is set to challenge two-term Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin after outpacing Rejani Raveendran and Charles Barman in the Republican contest.

In the 8th Congressional District, former businessman Tony Wied has secured the Republican nomination for both the remainder of former Rep. Mike Gallagher’s term and the election for a full two-year term, defeating former state Senator Roger Roth and incumbent Andre Jacque. He will run against Kristin Lyerly, the only Democratic candidate.

In the 6th U.S. Congressional District, incumbent Republican Glenn Grothman and Democratic candidate John Zarbano faced no opposition.

Winnebago County District Attorney Eric Sparr ran as an independent and was unopposed in his run for re-election.

Republican incumbents Julie Barthels and Amber Hoppa also faced no challengers for the positions of Winnebago County Clerk and Treasurer, respectively.

Susan Snyder won her Republican primary for the Register of Deeds against former Oshkosh Mayor Paul Esslinger, who currently serves on the council. Democrat Christopher G. Larson, the Chief Deputy Register of Deeds, ran unopposed and will compete against Snyder.

Voters rejected two proposed constitutional amendments aimed at granting the Legislature greater authority over federal spending.
