Political Accountability: Families Demand Justice on 9/11 Anniversary

As the United States observes the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, relatives of the victims called for accountability in the presence of presidential candidates. President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and Vice President Kamala Harris gathered at ground zero, marking a poignant moment intertwined with the political campaign season.

The event unfolded shortly after Trump and Harris debated, with all candidates appearing together. The ceremony featured a reading of victims’ names, with family members expressing their grievances to the political figures about the lack of progress in addressing issues surrounding the attacks, particularly accountability from Saudi Arabia, which has been linked to several of the hijackers.

Allison Walsh-DiMarzio, the daughter of a victim, publicly challenged both Trump and Harris to take action against Saudi Arabia, stating, “We deserve better.” Joanne Barbara, the widow of a fire chief, emphasized the continued need for justice, highlighting the protracted nature of the legal proceedings against alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

In their official capacities, Biden and Harris visited all three attack sites — ground zero, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. They, along with Trump and his running mate Senator JD Vance, paid respects at the Flight 93 National Memorial, where one of the hijacked planes crashed after passengers fought the hijackers.

Numerous Americans continue to observe the anniversary through community service, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin remarked on the enduring impact the attacks have had on U.S. policies and society. The tragedy not only resulted in the loss of nearly 3,000 lives but also altered America’s foreign policy and heightened domestic security concerns.

Critics expressed frustration over political figures attending for the sake of appearances rather than genuine remembrance. However, others welcomed the politicians’ presence while urging them to focus on unity and solutions for the future. Over the years, various memorials have seen both personal tributes and calls for action, as family members seek recognition for their loved ones and advocate for national security.

The ongoing dedication of younger generations to honor the victims was evident in the hearts of the attendees, as families vowed to remember and share the stories of those lost.
