A heartbreaking incident has unfolded in Namunamu settlement, located in Mataso, Ra, where a couple, Peni Bainivalu and Seini Josefini Sauraki, both 35 years old, lost their lives due to fish poisoning. The couple consumed toxic puffer fish eggs that had been caught by a relative from a local river, with the initial intent of feeding them to their dog. This tragic event occurred on Sunday night.
Family members revealed that both Peni and Seini ingested the poisonous fish eggs, and their teenage daughter also consumed parts of the fish. Currently, she remains in the hospital at Lautoka Aspen Hospital as a result of the incident. Meanwhile, the community is deeply mourning, as preparations for the couple’s burial are underway.
Their bodies were transported back to their village yesterday for their final rites. This incident underscores the significant risks associated with consuming certain fish species known to contain toxins, reflecting a pressing need for better education on safe fishing and consumption practices.
In light of this tragedy, community support will play a crucial role in helping the grieving families cope with their loss. The hope is that increased awareness and knowledge about the dangers of consuming contaminated fish can prevent similar tragedies in the future, fostering a safer environment for all.
