During last week’s intense heatwave, Point Pleasant borough took proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents by opening a cooling center at the municipal hall. With temperatures soaring near the 100-degree mark and a significant power outage affecting about 25% of the community, borough officials, in collaboration with the Point Pleasant Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the local police department, provided a refuge for those needing relief from the heat.
Mayor Robert Sabosik highlighted the challenges posed by JCP&L, which faced multiple incidents that disrupted electricity transmission in northern Ocean County and southern Monmouth County during the heatwave. In light of the dangerous temperatures and the potential health risks, particularly for vulnerable residents, the decision was made to open the air-conditioned municipal hall as a safe haven to rest and cool down.
The borough is prepared to reactivate the cooling center as needed throughout the summer months. Mayor Sabosik expressed the importance of providing such support and indicated that this approach could be utilized again in future emergencies.
Given the growing prevalence of extreme weather conditions and power outages, the borough’s response illustrates a commendable commitment to community safety and resilience.
