Google has announced price increases for its latest Pixel phones, marking them as the most expensive models to date. Despite spending nearly a year with the Pixel 8 Pro, many users, including myself, are hesitant to upgrade to the Pixel 9 Pro or 9 Pro XL. The standard Pixel 9 appears to be the most appealing option for those considering a new device.
The price hikes are unusual, especially for consecutive years, but Google has implemented them with the Pixel 9 lineup. The Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL are seen as overhyped, while the Pixel 9 stands out as the preferred choice.
The Pixel 9 is equipped with the same Tensor G4 chip as the higher-end models, which contradicts the idea that it’s a lesser variant. Although it has 12GB of RAM compared to the 16GB found in the Pro models, this difference may only influence app memory retention.
Additionally, the Pixel 9 features the same new AI-assisted photo editing tools introduced during the Made by Google event. Although it misses some video-focused functionalities, it still supports features like Pixel Studio for creating custom images and the Add Me feature for including the photographer in shots.
In terms of photography, the Pixel 9 uses the same 50MP main and 48MP ultrawide cameras as the Pro models, ensuring comparable image quality. While it lacks a dedicated telephoto camera, the main camera can still produce decent telephoto shots utilizing Google’s pixel binning technology.
The design of the Pixel 9 includes flatter edges and a redesigned camera bar, maintaining an IP68 rating for durability. It is constructed from aluminum and covered with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, offering robust protection.
Despite my frustration with the price increases—last year’s Pixel 8 started at $699, while the new Pixel 9 is priced at $799—it remains the most affordable model in the new lineup, with significant savings compared to the Pro variants that start at $999. As we await reviews, battery life comparisons will be crucial, particularly to determine if the Pixel 9 Pro offers substantial advantages over the Pixel 9.
