The Pittsfield Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars achieved a remarkable victory over Westfield, clinching the Western Massachusetts Championship with a score of 5-1. On Sunday, Kevin Smith showcased an impressive performance by striking out nine batters over 5 and two-thirds innings. At the plate, he contributed significantly with a 3-for-4 record and one RBI.
Smith allowed just one hit and one run before handing the mound over to Bryce Hoff, who finished the game with 1 and a third scoreless innings of relief. Pittsfield, having battled through pool play with a 1-1 record, faced off against the undefeated Westfield team, which had a perfect run leading to the finals.
In a strong offensive display, Pittsfield seized the momentum early, opening the scoring with two runs in the top of the third inning. Aiden Arseneau played a pivotal role, hitting a double that brought Jack Wendling and Austin Decker home. The team extended their lead to 5-0 before Westfield responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Arseneau not only contributed significantly by earning three RBIs but also stood out as a key player alongside Jace Coco and Jonathon Parson, both of whom added doubles to the team’s total.
With this victory, Pittsfield advances to the Babe Ruth 14-year-old New England Regional Championship set to take place from July 18-22 in North Providence, R.I. This championship opportunity shines a light of hope and excitement for the team as they continue their journey in the tournament circuit, representing their community with pride.
