Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman is wearing a cane during the Liberty Bowl on Friday night, as he continues his recovery following a hip replacement surgery performed on December 3. The Razorbacks, who finished the regular season with a 6-6 record, are set to face Texas Tech, boasting an 8-3 record, to wrap up the 2024 season.
Despite his recent surgery, Pittman remains optimistic about his recovery, stating that he can walk unaided for short distances but prefers to use the cane for stability on the sidelines. “I can walk without a cane about 20 yards, maybe,” he mentioned, explaining that it serves as a sort of security blanket while he coaches.
Pittman had been aware of his need for surgery since the summer but postponed the operation until the conclusion of the season. His struggle with mobility was evident throughout the season, hindering his ability to engage fully in team traditions, such as running through the A at home games.
Reflecting on the season, Pittman acknowledged the challenges he faced, indicating that coaching with a physical ailment felt like a battle for survival on the sideline, which he deemed unfair to his team. He did manage to avoid disruptions in bowl game preparations or recruiting tasks, but he expressed regret for not having the surgery earlier.
As Pittman concludes his fifth year as head coach, his overall record stands at 29-31 with Arkansas. He is now aiming to secure a victory that would push his bowl game record to 3-0. Friday’s game presents an opportunity for him to close out the season on a high note and reaffirm the team’s potential for future success.
As a positive outlook, Pittman’s resilience during this challenging season may ultimately strengthen his leadership and deepen the connection with his players moving forward. His determination to overcome personal challenges serves as an inspiring example for his team and supporters alike.
