Pitt Panthers Make History with First-Ever Win in Chapel Hill!

The University of Pittsburgh football team secured a historic victory against North Carolina, winning 34-24 at Kenan Memorial Stadium, marking their first-ever win in Chapel Hill. This win advances Pitt’s record to 5-0, their best start since 1991.

Eli Holstein showcased his skills as a dual-threat quarterback, completing 25 of 42 passes for 381 yards along with three touchdowns and one interception. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing for 76 yards and an additional touchdown, setting a Pitt freshman passing record during the game.

Desmond Reid was a standout performer, rushing 18 times for 55 yards while also excelling as a receiver. He recorded 11 receptions for 155 yards and a touchdown, contributing to two other scoring drives.

Despite some struggles, the Pitt defense managed to stifle North Carolina’s high-scoring offense with key plays, including three turnovers on downs and a crucial sack from Kyle Louis in the final minutes.

Pitt opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal by Ben Sauls. However, they allowed North Carolina to score first with an 84-yard pick-six by cornerback Kaleb Cost. Pitt responded effectively with two touchdowns in the first half, both set up by Reid, putting them ahead 17-10 at one point.

Though the Panthers faced challenges, including turnovers and penalties, they managed to regain the lead in the second half. Reid remained instrumental, leading to a touchdown that reclaimed the advantage. After a strong defensive effort, Pitt extended their lead with another touchdown from Holstein followed by a field goal from Sauls, solidifying their victory.

With this win, Pitt will return home next weekend to face California for their next ACC matchup, scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Acrisure Stadium, with television broadcast details to be announced soon.
