The Detroit Pistons are currently exploring the trade market for reserve forward Simone Fontecchio as they assess their options for the upcoming offseason. NBA reporter Michael Scotto revealed that the team is investigating both sign-and-trade scenarios as well as free agency possibilities.
After signing a two-year, $16 million contract last summer, Fontecchio’s performance did not meet expectations. Following offseason foot surgery, his shooting numbers declined significantly. He averaged just 33.5% from behind the arc on three attempts per game, a stark contrast to his earlier performance with the Pistons, where he shot 42% on 6.3 attempts per game during a 16-game period post-trade from the Utah Jazz.
Initially expected to serve as a key backup for starter Tobias Harris, contributing solid defensive plays and serving as a reliable 3-point shooting option, Fontecchio found himself largely sidelined during the playoffs. As the Pistons strategize their roster for next season, Fontecchio’s $8 million expiring contract positions him as an appealing candidate for trades, whether it be for clearing cap space or as part of a potential sign-and-trade setup.
Compounding the Pistons’ offseason challenges, they had aimed to secure a long-term deal with Malik Beasley, but this plan is currently in flux due to ongoing investigations related to his involvement in NBA gambling activities.
As the Pistons move forward, they are focused on refining their roster and addressing potential gaps while leveraging assets like Fontecchio to enhance their team dynamics. The upcoming decisions could set the stage for a stronger 2024 season, emphasizing the importance of strategic moves as they seek to build on last season’s promise.
