The Pittsburgh Pirates are eyeing potential roster enhancements this offseason, and one American League player could emerge as a valuable trade target. According to insights from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Katie Woo, Brandon Lowe from the Tampa Bay Rays is considered an “ideal fit” for the Pirates as they look to strengthen their lineup.
Lowe, who is entering the final year of his contract, is set to earn $11.5 million in 2026, making him one of the Rays’ highest earners, just behind first baseman Yandy Diaz. Given Tampa Bay’s typical strategy of not retaining or signing major free agents, it’s possible they will explore trading Lowe this winter.
The addition of a power-hitting player like Lowe could significantly enhance the Pirates’ offense, which struggled last season, ranking last in the league with only 84 home runs and a .293 weighted on-base average (wOBA) against right-handed pitchers. Last season, Lowe showed impressive numbers, batting .256 with an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of .873 against right-handed pitchers, while hitting 31 home runs over 134 games. His career weighted on-base average (wOBA) of .344 aligns with Spencer Horwitz’s team-leading figure for the Pirates in 2025.
While Oneil Cruz led the Pirates with 20 home runs last season, the signing of Lowe would provide an immediate boost to the middle of their batting order. However, his declining walk rate of 6.9% and lower performance against left-handed pitchers, evidenced by a .548 OPS, indicate he could serve as an effective platoon player for the team.
In addition to the Pirates, Rosenthal and Woo mentioned that the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants could also be in the market for a second baseman this offseason, suggesting Lowe may find interest from multiple teams.
This potential acquisition highlights the Pirates’ strategic approach as they seek to enhance their competitive edge in the upcoming season. With smart trades and smart decisions, the franchise is poised for an exciting offseason ahead.
