Pioneering Journalist Raney Aronson-Rath Honored with 2024 Chancellor Award

Columbia Journalism School announced that Raney Aronson-Rath, editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE, has been awarded the 2024 John Chancellor Excellence in Journalism Award. With over 25 years of experience across multiple roles such as reporter and correspondent, her work with the acclaimed PBS documentary series has garnered significant recognition.

The John Chancellor Award is given to a journalist who exemplifies “courage and integrity for cumulative professional accomplishments.” In her current position, Aronson-Rath oversees the series’ investigative reporting, producing more than 20 detailed documentaries annually addressing pressing global issues.

Jelani Cobb, dean of Columbia Journalism School, praised Aronson-Rath’s extensive behind-the-scenes contributions to important PBS programming over the years. Her leadership has propelled FRONTLINE to new levels, including the creation of theatrical documentaries and the launch of their first podcast.

Dedicated to enhancing public understanding, Aronson-Rath’s efforts have made FRONTLINE’s storytelling increasingly accessible, reaching millions on platforms like YouTube. Industry peers commended her for her dedication to ethical journalism and her ability to translate complex topics into compelling visual narratives.

Aronson-Rath has received multiple accolades for her contributions to journalism, including the New York Women in Film & Television’s Enid Roth Award and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The John Chancellor Award, established in honor of the esteemed NBC News anchor and correspondent, includes a $25,000 honorarium. The award ceremony will take place on November 14, 2024, at Columbia Journalism School.
