Pink adjusted her typical performance style by presenting a heartfelt rendition of her song “What About Us” during the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago on Thursday night. Accompanying her was her daughter, Willow Sage, who joined in for a duet.
The duo, along with their backup singers, delivered the song’s powerful lyrics, including the lines: “We are searchlights, we can see in the dark/We are rockets, pointed up at the stars/We are billions of beautiful hearts/And you sold us down the river too far.” A pink light illuminated the crowd of thousands during their emotional performance.
Earlier in the day, the mother-daughter pair was seen rehearsing the track from Pink’s album, “Beautiful Trauma.” The music video for “What About Us,” released in 2017, spotlighted communities whose rights faced challenges during the Trump administration, including immigrants and LGBTQ+ individuals.
Last month, Pink publicly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris during a record-breaking fundraising Zoom call that garnered nearly $2 million. During the call, Pink expressed her gratitude for women having a voice, stating, “We are in this … and I’m just really grateful that us women are going to have a voice, and we’ve always made our voices heard, and now it’s time to just get extra loud. Let’s go. Let’s get loud.”
The convention has seen a vibrant array of musical performances. On the third night, artists like John Legend and Sheila E. honored Minnesota with a rendition of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy,” Stevie Wonder performed “Higher Ground,” and Maren Morris took the stage. Additionally, Lil Jon surprised the audience on the second night with “Turn Down for What” during the states’ roll call.
In 2020, Pink expressed her support for President Biden and Vice President Harris by participating in the virtual “I Will Vote” event. She has consistently advocated for LGBTQ+ rights and reproductive rights, issues that align with Harris’s advocacy.
