As the busyness of the Christmas season begins to fade and road traffic settles, Rizban Shah reflects on the extensive hours he spent driving during the festive period while emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices. Mr. Shah embarked on his journey to Suva on Christmas Eve, departing from his family home in Ba at 3 a.m. to deliver pineapples produced by their family-owned farming business, which has been thriving for over 20 years.

“Christmas time is busy on the roads and people must be careful,” Mr. Shah advised, acknowledging the heightened activity on the roads during the holiday season. For him, the festive period represents not only a time of joy and celebration but also one of serious responsibility.

The early morning travel has become a well-established routine each festive season, driven by the increased demand for fresh produce. Many choose to spend Christmas Eve involved in preparations with family, but Mr. Shah dedicates hours to being on the road, a commitment he has grown accustomed to over the years.

He openly shares that leaving his wife and daughters during this special time can be challenging, yet it has become an accepted sacrifice in maintaining their family’s livelihood. “I will return to Ba today to spend Christmas with my wife and kids,” he expressed, highlighting the importance of family amidst his work commitments.

Over the past two decades, the family’s agricultural business has not only provided for various generations but has also fortified family connections through their collective hard work and dedication. “I am happy to provide for my family and serve our customers,” Mr. Shah concluded, illustrating the fulfilling nature of his work and the pride he takes in supporting both his family and the wider community. His story serves as a reminder of the dedication and effort that underpin the agricultural sector, especially during the festive season.
