PHOENIX — Phoenix matched a daily heat record on Thursday, with the temperature at the city’s official measurement site climbing to 114 degrees around 3:15 p.m., tying the Aug. 21 mark set in 2019.

The metro area remains under an extreme heat warning that has been extended through Sunday. Forecasters say there is a chance for monsoon storm activity, with storm chances across the Phoenix area increased by upwards of 20-30 percent. There were isolated storms in parts of the Valley last week, but Sky Harbor International Airport has not recorded measurable rainfall since July 2.

What to expect the rest of the week: Temperatures are likely to stay very hot, with the potential for scattered storms if the monsoon moisture arrives. Rainfall, if any, is expected to be spotty and localized rather than widespread.

Heat safety tips: Stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours, and check on neighbors and loved ones who may be vulnerable to heat exposure. If storms develop, be mindful of lightning, strong winds, and localized flooding.

Positive note: Any monsoon activity that materializes could bring brief relief from the heat and a welcome, if temporary, drop in temperatures, even as the overall pattern remains hot and dry for much of the week.
