A Santa statue waved cheerfully to passing drivers along Brace Road in Cherry Hill on December 14, but the holiday cheer may soon be accompanied by winter weather, as the Philadelphia region prepares for its second snowfall of the season. The National Weather Service announced a winter storm watch for much of eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey, effective from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Forecasters are nearly certain that various forms of winter precipitation will blanket the area beginning Friday, though the specific type, amount, and timing of the precipitation have not yet been determined. Eric Hoeflich, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, indicated that the storm could have significant impacts.

Predictions suggest that Philadelphia could receive between 1 and 4 inches of snow from Friday evening into the night, while some neighboring northern Delaware areas, southern New Jersey, and Southeastern Pennsylvania may experience 1 to 3 inches. The more eastern parts of Pennsylvania and much of New Jersey could see heavier accumulations, ranging from 4 to 7 inches. However, weather conditions may vary considerably, leading to a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, or rain, depending on localized temperature changes.

While this weekend’s snow may place a festive twist on the traditionally white holiday concept, it is expected that Philadelphians will not awaken to a snow-covered landscape on Christmas morning. After experiencing sunny skies and highs in the 40s on Wednesday, Christmas Day will likely be characterized by above-average temperatures in the mid-40s, possibly accompanied by light showers.

This upcoming winter weather event will mark the second measurable snowfall for Philadelphia this season. A prior storm on December 14 had already delivered 4.2 inches at Philadelphia International Airport, with suburban communities in Bucks and Chester Counties recording over 8 inches.

If you have plans to travel on Friday evening, be prepared for potential delays and hazardous road conditions due to snow and ice. Travelers out of Philadelphia International Airport can stay informed about flight conditions by checking local resources for updates on delays and cancellations as the storm approaches. The arrival of winter weather, while complicating travel plans, brings a sense of seasonal excitement and holiday spirit to the region.
