PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia Phillies are in the market for a bench coach, with Don Mattingly emerging as a potential candidate. Recently departing his role as bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, the 64-year-old Mattingly brings a wealth of experience, having enjoyed a distinguished playing career with the New York Yankees and considerable managerial experience with the Dodgers and Marlins.
The Phillies are looking to fill the bench coach position after moving Mike Calitri to a new role as Major League field coordinator. Mattingly has a strong rapport with Phillies manager Rob Thomson, as they have previously worked together in the Yankees’ organization alongside Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long. Their established relationships could cultivate a seamless transition in the coaching staff.
Recently, Mattingly participated in a meet-and-greet event for Gold Glove Award winners at the MLB Flagship Store in New York City. He reflected on his career and current thoughts about the future, expressing a desire to balance family life with his passion for baseball. “I feel good, but the road kind of wears you down,” Mattingly shared, adding that he is currently focused on finding a harmonious balance between family responsibilities and being involved in the game he loves.
While he indicated he is not currently seeking a managing role, noting the Colorado Rockies as a less-than-ideal fit, Mattingly remains open to opportunities in coaching. “At this point, I just want to chill and figure out what I want to do,” he stated, emphasizing his intention to take time to assess what comes next in his professional journey.
In addition to the coaching situation, the Phillies have made a strategic move to enhance their roster by agreeing to terms with outfielder Bryan De La Cruz on a Minor League contract. De La Cruz, 28, who has played parts of five seasons with teams including the Marlins, Pirates, and Braves, brings a solid offensive background, having hit a combined .251 with 21 home runs in the 2024 season.
De La Cruz adds depth to the Phillies’ outfield, particularly as they seek to incorporate more right-handed bats into their lineup. With a chance to showcase his skills in Spring Training, his acquisition reflects the team’s proactive approach to strengthening their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
This combination of potential coaching and player additions optimistically highlights the Phillies’ preparations for a competitive future.
