The Philadelphia Phillies have placed third baseman Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list due to a fractured left rib, which he aggravated during a game against the Los Angeles Angels. To fill Bohm’s spot on the roster, the team recalled Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Manager Rob Thomson noted that Bohm felt discomfort during his last at-bat on Friday and had to consult a doctor, leading to the decision to place him on the injured list. Bohm had previously incurred the injury from a hit-by-pitch in a game against San Diego, which sidelined him for the final match before the All-Star break. Despite the setback, Bohm has been performing well this season, batting .278 with eight home runs and 42 RBIs over 92 games, including a strong .304 batting average in his last 64 games.
With Bohm out, Otto Kemp will take over at third base, with a possible rotation of players including Edmundo Sosa and Weston Wilson. Sosa will also start at second base this Saturday against left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, while Brandon Marsh and John Rojas will man the outfield, marking a rare opportunity for Marsh to face a lefty.
In positive news for the rotation, Aaron Nola’s recent live batting practice session was encouraging, showcasing good command and effectiveness with his curveball. If his upcoming bullpen session goes well, a minor league rehab assignment could set him up for an early August return.
Taijuan Walker makes his 10th start for the Phillies with a solid season thus far, balancing between starting and relief pitching. Thomson praised Walker’s mentality and his pitching performance this year, highlighting his commitment and adaptability.
Additionally, the top prospect Andrew Painter is expected to start for Lehigh Valley on Thursday. Despite challenges with command after his recovery from Tommy John surgery, both Thomson and Phillies CEO John Middleton expressed optimism regarding Painter’s development, emphasizing the importance of health and performance before his eventual MLB debut.
As the team navigates these roster changes, the focus remains on maintaining strong play and readiness for the remainder of the season.
