Clariss Guce of the Philippines showcased her resilience by finishing the first round of the Greater Toledo Classic at the Highlands Meadow Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio, with a one-under par 70 amidst challenging weather conditions. The $300,000 tournament, part of the Epson Tour, experienced disruptions due to inclement weather, causing delays and incomplete standings.
Guce started strong, sinking birdies on the 6th and 8th holes and turning in an impressive front nine score of 32. However, she encountered difficulties on the 13th and 16th holes, which hampered her momentum. Fortunately, she regained composure through a crucial birdie on the par-5 17th hole, finishing the back nine with a score of 38. In light of the weather interruptions, she currently sits in provisional 23rd place, trailing clubhouse leader Mia Hammond by three strokes.
Hammond, an American amateur, displayed remarkable skill by carding a flawless five-under 66, taking a one-shot lead over China’s Yue Ren, who finished with a 67. Additionally, Japan’s Erika Hara was making waves on the course, sitting at six-under through 14 holes before play was halted.
Fellow Filipina competitor Dottie Ardina fought back from a shaky start with a front nine score of 37, ultimately finishing with an even-par 72 and placing her in joint 50th. Unfortunately, ICTSI teammate Pauline del Rosario struggled significantly, ending her round with an 82. Sam Bruce also faced challenges, trapped at five-over with three holes left when play was suspended.
As the tournament progresses, the fluctuating leaderboard keeps the competition thrilling, offering an opportunity for players like Guce and Ardina to make a strong comeback in the following rounds. With determination and skill evident on the course, there is hope for a strong performance from the Filipina golfers as they navigate the challenging conditions and aim to climb the standings.
