Philadelphia will officially welcome a new WNBA franchise in the 2030 season, marking a significant milestone for the city’s sports landscape. While the team’s name is yet to be announced, this upcoming franchise will be Philadelphia’s first major professional sports addition since 2008.
Josh Harris, managing partner of the Philadelphia 76ers and a key figure behind this initiative, expressed his excitement about bringing a WNBA team to the city. He emphasized Philadelphia’s legacy as a basketball hub, stating that the city deserves its own professional women’s basketball team. Harris acknowledged the collaborative efforts of various community leaders, including Governor Shapiro and Mayor Cherelle Parker, in making this vision a reality.
Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO of Comcast Corporation, celebrated the announcement as a significant day for Philadelphia. His company is partnered with HBSE in this development, and he expressed pride in contributing to the city’s sporting tradition.
The franchise’s establishment aligns with plans for a new sports arena for both the 76ers and the Philadelphia Flyers, set to replace the Wells Fargo Center. This new venue, expected to open in 2031, aims to enhance the sports experience in Philadelphia and attract new fan engagement.
The WNBA expansion also includes new teams in Cleveland and Detroit, growing the league’s roster to 18 teams within the next five years. Current expectations have the WNBA expanding from its 13 active teams, with franchises in Toronto and Portland anticipated in 2026.
