Phil Collins has candidly shared his recent health struggles, noting that he now requires round-the-clock nursing care. In an interview with British presenter Zoe Ball, part of the BBC podcast series “Eras,” the iconic musician revealed, “everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me” in the past few years.
As he approaches his 75th birthday on January 30, Collins reflected on his health challenges, which include five knee surgeries. He mentioned, “I can walk, albeit with assistance,” highlighting the perseverance he’s shown through these tough times.
He disclosed the extent of his health issues, stating, “I got Covid in hospital, my kidneys started to back up.” He admitted that his alcohol consumption contributed to his kidney problems. “I wasn’t one of those guys that sort of stayed up all night drinking. I’d drink during the day, but I guess I had too much of it,” Collins explained. Although grateful for his past, he noted that the accumulation of these challenges resulted in several months spent in the hospital.
While expressing hope for recovery and the desire to regain full mobility, Collins remains uncertain about returning to the stage, with his last performance having occurred in 2022. Despite these difficulties, he maintains a positive outlook on his career, stating, “I couldn’t have wished for a more varied and eventful playing career.”
The former Genesis frontman has previously discussed how his health has impacted his music career. In a 2021 interview, he revealed his inability to play the drums anymore, leading to his son, Nic, taking over during a reunion tour. Collins himself has faced various injuries and health issues, including a crippling back surgery in 2015 that resulted in nerve damage.
Collins is not only a musical legend but also a devoted father of three other children, in addition to Nic. His daughter, Lily Collins, has gained fame as the lead in the popular Netflix series “Emily in Paris.” Reflecting on his life experiences, Collins expressed a desire to make amends for past mistakes, particularly concerning his children, whom he described as “amazingly well-adjusted” despite their journey.
The final part of Collins’ interview is set to air on BBC television on January 31, offering listeners further insight into the life of this remarkable artist, who continues to inspire with his resilience and enduring spirit.
