The PGA Tour has announced the cancellation of its 2026 season-opening event in Hawaii, The Sentry, after unsuccessful attempts to find an alternative venue due to unfavorable conditions. Originally scheduled for January 8-11, 2026, at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Maui, the tournament was impacted by ongoing drought conditions on the island.
In a statement, the PGA Tour indicated that it explored various alternate venues both within Hawaii and beyond. However, they ultimately determined that logistical challenges, including shipping timelines, the necessary tournament infrastructure, and vendor support, rendered it impossible to proceed with The Sentry.
As a result, the PGA Tour’s first event of the upcoming year will now be the Sony Open, set to take place from January 15-18, 2026, at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
The Sentry has a storied history, having shifted from California to Maui in 1999. It served as the PGA Tour’s season opener from 1986 until 2013 and was set to reclaim that position in 2024 when the Tour reverted to a calendar-year schedule. This year’s event was expected to feature the top 50 players based on the previous year’s FedExCup standings, along with winners from PGA Tour events throughout the year.
While the cancellation marks a significant change for the Tour schedule, the focus now shifts to the Sony Open, which will continue to attract top talent and maintain the excitement of the golfing season in Hawaii.
