Tahaad Pettiford, who showcased his talent as a backup point guard for Auburn, has officially withdrawn from the 2025 NBA Draft and announced his return to the team for his sophomore season via an Instagram post. Last season, he was recognized for his efforts, earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team with averages of 11.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 0.9 steals across 22.9 minutes per game.
Pettiford’s performance shone through in the NCAA Tournament, where he averaged 15.2 points and 3.6 assists over five games. Notably, he set an Auburn record for a freshman in the NCAA Tournament with an impressive 23-point game against Creighton. His potential caught the attention of NBA scouts, as he was one of 75 players selected for the NBA Draft Combine, where he not only recorded the second-best vertical jump at 42 inches but also excelled in the scrimmages, scoring 23 points along with eight assists and two steals.
Despite being projected by ESPN to be selected in the second round of the draft, Pettiford’s decision to return to Auburn emphasizes his commitment to further develop his skills. Coach Bruce Pearl acknowledged the situation, stating that Pettiford still harbors the ambition to make a first-round pick. Pearl anticipates that if Pettiford rejoins the squad, his role will expand significantly, providing an opportunity for him to start and take on more responsibilities. This prospect excites both Pettiford and the Auburn fan base, as they look forward to seeing him contribute more this upcoming season.
Auburn’s roster for the 2025-26 season is shaping up, with a total of 10 newcomers, including four transfers and a mix of junior college and high school talent. The team’s ongoing reinforcements signal a bright future as they prepare for another competitive season.
This announcement brings hope, as Pettiford’s continued presence at Auburn not only strengthens the team but also suggests a commitment to his growth, paving the way for an exciting season ahead.
