Auburn University’s men’s basketball team is set to welcome back a pivotal player from their recent NCAA tournament run for the upcoming 2025-2026 season. Tahaad Pettiford, the standout point guard who played a crucial role in Auburn’s journey to the Final Four, has announced his decision to withdraw from the NBA Draft via social media, ensuring his place on the Tigers’ roster for next year.
Pettiford had declared for the draft on April 7 while maintaining the option to return to college basketball. During the 2024-2025 season, he made a significant impact on the team, averaging 11.6 points and three assists per game, primarily coming off the bench in 37 of the team’s 38 games. His ability to perform under pressure was showcased in several high-stakes matches, including impressive performances against Houston, Duke, Purdue, Kentucky, and a standout game in the Sweet 16 against Michigan where he scored 20 points.
His draft stock saw a notable rise at the NBA Combine, where he impressed scouts by scoring 23 points and recording eight assists in a scrimmage, complemented by an outstanding 42-inch vertical leap—the second highest among participants. Despite this, projections suggested he would be selected in the second round, with ESPN estimating a 37th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons.
Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl expressed his belief that the team would greatly benefit from Pettiford’s return, highlighting him as the only scholarship player coming back from last season’s squad. With an increased role anticipated for the upcoming season, Pettiford’s decision is a boost for the Tigers as they aim for continued success in college basketball.
The return of this promising talent not only strengthens Auburn’s lineup but also offers fans a reason to be optimistic about the next season’s prospects. As Pettiford gears up for what will be a more prominent role, there is an exciting potential for growth and achievements ahead.
