The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team encountered a tough competition at the Perth 7s, wrapping up their pool matches without securing a victory after losing to Japan 31-14. This disappointing outcome marks the second consecutive year that the women’s team has faced similar challenges in the group stage in Perth.

The Fijiana kicked off their tournament with two losses against formidable opponents, the USA and New Zealand, which set a challenging tone for their remaining games. In their match against Japan, the contest began with intensity as the Japanese team scored their first try just 40 seconds into the game. The Fijians quickly responded when Mere Vocevoce touched down, putting Fiji on the scoreboard within a minute.

Japan remained aggressive, scoring shortly thereafter to regain momentum. However, Reapi Ulunisau set up veteran Ana Maria Naimasi, giving Fiji a momentary lead at 14-12. Just before halftime, Japan struck again, converting their try to lead 19-14 as the teams went into the break.

In the second half, Fiji’s chances were hampered by issues of indiscipline, culminating in dismissals for Vocevoce and Naimasi. This lack of composure allowed Japan to increase their advantage with another try, ultimately clinching a commanding victory.

Despite the tough outcomes, this experience presents an opportunity for growth and reflection for the Fijiana team as they aim to regroup and enhance their gameplay for future competitions. The challenges faced at this tournament are likely to strengthen their resolve and commitment to improve.
